Glenda Parry’s new role as a vicar’s wife is not suiting her, especially as her husband, Robert, used to be a high-flying executive. She had made a choice to be an executive’s wife, not a vicar’s wife. Now she has an identity crisis, and to cap it all, their money has been frittered away on Robert’s new calling. This causes a great deal of friction between them. All Glenda is left with is her lovely house and she wants to keep it, even if it is a terrible struggle. She is afraid to have children because she can no longer afford them. She has two good friends who cannot meet the expensive needs of their children. Pru is a single parent trying to keep her son in private school. Kate is a farmer’s wife with a very gifted, musical daughter who deserves financial support she cannot give. Sindy turns up. She is eighteen, an art student touring Europe at her parents’ expense. They hope she will forget her baby who is in foster care. However, she does not spend any money, but keeps it so she can eventually get the child back. Joe is a jack the lad lottery winner who befriends them. The women are desperate for a cash injection to set their lives back on target. Selina, a high-class escort, helps them to become escorts for just a few days, to enable them to make some money. This is very successful, and the women then have enough money to resolve their problems.
Playing age, 40s. His age is not particularly important, but he has climbed the corporate ladder and retrained as a vicar, so his age needs to reflect this. He is strong, but is assuming the vicar’s role and has a pious air about him. Looks and physique are not important, but he needs to be fairly attractive.
Playing age, about 35 – 40. Attractive, intelligent, probably needs a good body to enable her to wear the clothes in act two. She has a strong character and is quick witted.
Age not really important, but he needs to have a young attitude. He is naïve, a little slow on the uptake, friendly and trusting. He takes his job and the needs of the community very seriously.
Playing age late about 30 – 40. Tall, attractive, macho, forthright, confident, good-hearted, protective towards the women. A bit of a Jack-the-lad, he is a self-made man of wealth.
Playing age 18, she is an American, cute, pretty, small and petite. Her character is up-front, motivated and determined. She can fight her corner. Her small stature does not reflect the strength in her character. It might be an advantage if she can tap-dance. (Depending on how the director plays the dressing up scene.)
Playing age 30s. No particular size but larger women have played this well. She is middle-class, but she is overworked and has the attitude of someone who is undervalued. She dresses badly, as she is too busy to care about how she looks. She enjoys community work and is very enthusiastic when she is involved. She is attractive but this is masked by her overpowering circumstances.
Playing age late 30s early 40s, Upper class, attractive but stressed and overburdened by responsibility. She is smart, practical, a little cynical, but hardworking.
Playing age about 25 – 35. She is tall, beautiful, intelligent, focused, and expensively dressed. No nonsense type. Business minded.
